GoodCall celebrates commitment to the Living Wage

GoodCall are an accredited Living Wage Employer!

In Scotland, nearly a fifth of all jobs (19.3%) pay less than the real Living Wage. This is the only rate calculated according to the current cost of living in the UK. It provides a voluntary benchmark for employers that wish to ensure their staff earn a wage they can live on, not just the government minimum wage. Between 2011 – 2019, the movement has delivered a pay rise to over 160,000 people and put over £800 million directly into the pockets of workers.

By paying the Living Wage, GoodCall is ensuring employees can earn enough to live on. That basic fairness is at the heart of what the campaign is trying to achieve and why great businesses and organisations choose to go further than the government minimum, and this fits in with our social enterprise mission.

This commitment is one of the greatest ways businesses and organisations can make a direct impact on levels of in-work poverty in Scotland. This also reflects our commitment to supporting meaningful employment for individuals from disadvantaged or marginalised groups.

Why the Living Wage matters to GoodCall

The campaign empowers individuals to become more included in society, better provide for their families and understand the value of their skills and expertise as an employee. We are also committed to influencing social change in our community and Dundee is the first city in the UK to be awarded recognition as a Living Wage City – we aim to support this city-level approach to tackling low pay.

The Poverty Alliance found in January 2018 that Dundee had some of the worst levels of in-work poverty, as well as some of the worst child poverty rates in Scotland.

In response, organisations in Dundee have worked together to help fight this through a scheme to recognise groups of local ‘anchor’ institutions which not only pay a fair wage to their employees and contractors but which also seek to use their influence to spread the benefits of accreditation in their local economy for both workers and businesses.

Becoming an accredited employer is important to the team at GoodCall because it signals not only to our staff but to the wider community, that we are a socially responsible organisation that is committed to fair pay. We believe that in order to create socially responsible employment opportunities, we need to start tackling the underlying social issues that trap individuals in long term unemployment.

We celebrate this commitment and hope that it will help us attract a diverse range of candidates from all different kinds of backgrounds. Fair pay initiatives encourage workers to focus on their job and can build the kind of supportive culture we want to cultivate at GoodCall.
